The phaseout, which does not affect Germany''s "brown coal" surface mines, will be reviewed by parliament in 2012. Seven of the mines are located in RhineWestphalia, and one is located in the Saarland. The plan has been approved by German mining conglomerate RFG, which intends to refocus itself on real estate, power generation, and chemicals.

Germany has considerable reserves of hard coal and lignite, making these the country''s most important indigenous sources of energy. However, in the case of hard coal, there remain only approximately 20 million tonnes to be extracted following the political decision to end subsidised German hard coal production in 2018.

May 29, 2014· Another is that the lignite mining and power industry is a rare source of jobs in eastern Germany, the poorest part of the country. "If they dismantled lignite here it would lead to massive social upheaval in the region," says Wolfgang Krüger, managing director of the Chamber of Commerce in Cottbus, Brandenburg.

Conflicts on lignite (brown coal) mining in Germany (west and east) are old. The EJatlas contains entries for several of them. They took a new turn in 2015 with the Ende Gelände movement which squarely linked up two issues: local damage from open cast coal mining and global climate change when coal is burnt.

Sep 14, 2016· Germany''s dirty little coal secret. Germany''s reputation as a pioneer of clean, green energy seems a far cry from the reality on the ground in the village of Atterwasch.

Oct 26, 2018· The power giant RWE has faced fierce opposition to its plans for expanded lignite mining in Hambach forest, Germany. But as energy expert Gerard Wynn writes, a new report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis suggests there could be four more significant reasons for RWE to renounce its commitment to of Energy and Carbon.

The Rhenish (Rhineland) lignitemining region covers a 2,500km² area to the west of Cologne. RWE Power AG, which was created during 2003 by the merger of RWE Rheinbraun with other RWE interests, operates four large opencast mines in the district – Hambach, Garzweiler, Inden and Bergheim – which between them produced of lignite in 2006.

The German towns Immerath, Pesch and Luetzerath will soon be wiped off the map to allow energy giant RWE to enlarge its huge openpit lignite mine of Garzweiler in the state of North RhineWestfalia. Lignite extracted at Garzweiler directly feeds the RWE power plants.

One does not has to replace something that is surplus already. Both, atom power and lignite mining, are therefore completely useless for the national economy, they are both a burden for the local and global society.

But rather than losing itself in sentimental nostalgia, the project touches on current ecological issues, above all the ubiquitous legacy of opencast lignite mining at the Bärwalde mine between 1970 and 1992: according to local tradition, the park lies directly above a seam of coal and was only saved from the excavators by a clever manipulation with switched sample drillings.

Approximately 20,000 people are employed in Germany''s lignite industry — of which 15,000 work in open pit mines and 5,000 in lignite power plants.

Lignite ensures one quarter of Germany''s electricity generation. Around 60 million tonnes of lignite we extract from our opencast mines per year. In Germany, almost every tenth kilowatt hour of electricity consumed is produced in our power plants in Brandenburg and Saxony.
